The two leaders have today received the following letter supporting the current intensive process urging them to proceed to fully exploiting the current favourable timing:

Re:
Broad bi-communal initiative in support of current intensive process for a successful conclusion of negotiations

Following a call by the Bi-communal Peace Initiative – United Cyprus, a broad meeting of the organizations comprising the Initiative as well as other broad representative entities from both communities, took place on Thursday 3rd November, 2016 at the conference hall of CCMC on the buffer zone in Nicosia. The current intensive phase of the negotiations was examined with the meeting expressing its full support to the process, urging the two leaders to take full advantage of the current timing for a successful conclusion of the talks.
The meeting unanimously welcomed the steps taken to organize and coordinate the actions of civil Society on a bi-communal basis directed towards taking full advantage of the favourable timing for the Solution of the Cyprus problem, subsequently working as a mass movement to secure the successful adoption of the agreement by the whole society and culminating in working for the smooth implementation of the Agreement to be reached. The meeting agreed to continue discussions for arranging all practical coordination issues and working towards mobilizing further sections of society.
The relevant declaration of the Bi-communal Peace Initiative, countersigned by a large number of organizations, is attached to this letter. The declaration forms the basis for securing the support of further sections of society.

Bi-communal Peace Initiative - United Cyprus
DECLARATION
At this most crucial stage of the negotiations for the Solution of the Cyprus problem and as the current intensive negotiations are reaching a decisive point, the Bi-Communal Peace Initiative – United Cyprus is intensifying its efforts to mobilize the broader masses of Turkish and Greek Cypriots based on the common perspective for Peace and Reunification.
In view of this common perspective we declare that:
1. We support the current intensified negotiations and are calling on the two leaders to utilize every creative route to arrive at an agreed resolution of all outstanding issues the soonest possible. Confident that the two leaders will remain committed to their common vision for a reunited and peaceful island we expect that they will take full advantage of the window of opportunity available to them.
2. We are working for the creation of a bi-zonal, bi-communal United Federal Cyprus with a single international identity, single citizenship and single sovereignty, based on the political equality of the two communities, as defined in the relevant UN resolutions and the agreements of the two community leaders, for the creation of enduring peace and stability in Cyprus and our region.
3. We call upon our leaders to arrive at reasonable arrangements on the property and land issues that will allow the two communities to develop and prosper in harmony, emphasizing that the Peace dividend is more precious than the compromises we need to make.
4. Conscious of the realities surrounding the violence of our past we consider it appropriate that we apologise to each other for the atrocious crimes committed and pledge that we will jointly ensure that these will never be repeated again. Unlike the past we pledge that we will work together to implement the agreement that will be reached and ensure that we will deal in conditions of common understanding with the problems that will arise.
Amid the violence and instability prevailing in our region and the risks associated with the continuation of an unresolved problem but equally conscious of the opportunities opening up through the solution of the Cyprus problem we consider it urgent that an agreed resolution of the Cyprus problem be reached.
Let us all then unite in a common bi-communal front, more determined and stronger than ever before, to push forward for Solution and organize to support the agreement that will be reached for a common peaceful future for the generations to come!
