Protesters say Cyprus ‘not a NATO’ aircraft carrier’

Young Greek and Turkish Cypriots were protesting on Saturday over the use of the Akrotiri British bases to bomb the Islamic State in Syria. A crowd of a few dozen youths, gathered at the UN buffer zone at Ledra Street  shouting against the use of Cyprus “as an aircraft carrier for NATO”.
“Even in the 21st century we have to face the post-colonial policies of Britain. Cyprus is not NATO’s or any other country’s aircraft carrier and nor will it ever be,” a joint statement from the two youth communities said.
Chanting ‘British bases out’, they stressed Britain’s policies had caused a part of the population “to kill each other so England can maintain its presence keeping its military bases (in Cyprus).”
People in Syria are in need of help through food and shelter not military operations resulting in death and tears under the guise of democracy and peace, Christos Christofias and Cemre Ipciler said in a joint statement both in the Greek and Turkish language. Christofias, who serves as EDON’s general secretary (AKEL’s youth group) told the Cyprus Mail the Republic of Cyprus “should have put a stop to the use of the bases but instead it offered its support for their use.”
He was referring to Foreign Minister Ionnis Kasoulides’ recent statements where he stressed Cyprus’ support in fighting terrorism and expressed the availability of the bases to carry out the attacks.
The UK has used the bases for over a year to fight ISIS in Iraq.
Ipciler, external relations secretary of Bağımsızlık Yolu (Independence Path) said “any solution (to the Cyprus problem) is threatened by the existence of military bases.”
“Our island was divided in the first place because of NATO intervention,” while protestors called on the leaders of both communities to discuss removing the British bases as part of a solution to the Cyprus problem.”
The statement was signed by EDON, the Communal Democracy Party, the United Cyprus Party, Baraka and Independence Path.
